Meghan Markle reportedly wants to put herself at the center of a new Princess Diana documentary — and insiders claim the Duchess believes she is the perfect person to tell the late royal’s story.
Prince Harry has reportedly been working on a film about his mother ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2027. But according to royal insiders, the project may be just as much Meghan’s production as Harry’s.
Royal commentator Richard Kay recently reported that Harry has started contacting some of Diana’s longtime friends about taking part in the documentary.
But former publicist Rob Shuter claims people close to the situation told him Meghan is heavily involved behind the scenes.
“When the Daily Mail broke the story that Harry was working on a movie, a TV movie about his mother, I hit the phones right away,” Shuter said during an appearance on Maureen Callahan’s The Nerve podcast.
“And immediately people said, ‘It’s Meghan.’ And it’s not Harry’s movie; it’s Harry and Meghan’s movie. It is the two of them.”
Shuter claimed Meghan sees herself as an experienced television producer and believes she understands what makes a successful documentary.
“She fancies herself as a TV producer,” he said. “She has been on television shows. Some have been hits.”
Before marrying Harry, Meghan was best known for playing Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits.
More recently, she served as an executive producer and host of the Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, which was later canceled after receiving mixed reviews.
According to Shuter, Meghan’s ambitions go beyond producing the Diana documentary.
He claims the Duchess also plans to narrate it herself.
“This is the project, and her husband and herself are hiring Meghan,” he said.
It would not be Meghan’s first major narration job.
Harry famously pitched his wife’s voice-over talents to then-Disney CEO Bob Iger during the 2019 London premiere of The Lion King.
“You seem surprised, but yeah, she’s really interested,” Harry was heard telling Iger at the event.
Meghan later landed the narration job for Disney’s 2020 nature documentary Elephant.
Reviews of her performance were mixed, with some critics praising the production while others mocked the Duchess’ dramatic delivery.
But Shuter claims Meghan is determined to become the voice of Harry’s deeply personal project about Diana.
“They’re not going to hire Judi Dench,” he said. “They’re not going to hire a great grand dame of the British acting world to do this. They’re not going to hire Hugh Grant or some Brit with some status. They’re going to hire Meghan.”
The Sussexes have repeatedly compared Meghan’s experience with the royal family and British press to Diana’s struggles before her death.
Diana was killed in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36.
Now, Shuter claims Meghan believes those shared experiences make her uniquely qualified to tell Diana’s story.
“Meghan’s going to narrate the story, and she feels as if she’s the best person to tell it because, like Diana, she’s suffered,” he claimed.
The reported documentary comes as Harry continues attempting to rebuild ties with Britain following years of tension with the royal family.
King Charles has also reportedly stressed that Harry and Meghan are now private citizens and do not officially represent the monarchy.
Still, if the project moves forward as reported, Meghan could soon become the voice telling the story of one of the most famous women in royal history — her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
