A Swedish MEP has filed a police complaint against a fellow European lawmaker, accusing him of racist hate speech after she was targeted on social media for condemning far-right, anti-immigration chants in the European Parliament.
The complaint follows an incident last month in which some right-wing MEPs chanted “send them back” after a vote on increasing deportations across the EU. Iraqi-born Swedish MEP Abir Al-Sahlani condemned the chants, saying she had “never felt as unsafe” in the Parliament and describing the incident as a new low.
Following her remarks, Danish MEP Kristoffer Storm posted online that Al-Sahlani “should go home”, while Finnish MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen responded to a video of her speech with the words “Cry more”.
Al-Sahlani’s complaint targets Storm, alleging racist and hate speech. Both Storm and Tynkkynen have denied any wrongdoing.
