Finland’s Defence Forces on Tuesday restricted part of the airspace off the country’s southern coast near the Russian border due to the risk of stray drones, a military spokesperson said.
The restriction was also extended to maritime traffic in the area, the Defence Forces said in a post on X. The move comes amid growing concern across Europe over unidentified drone activity near sensitive areas and military infrastructure.
Several NATO countries bordering Russia have raised security concerns following repeated drone incidents. In Romania, authorities have reported multiple cases of Russian drones or drone debris entering its airspace during Moscow’s attacks on neighbouring Ukraine, prompting calls for stronger air defence measures.
Finland, which joined NATO in 2023 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has strengthened surveillance along its eastern border and increased cooperation with allies as tensions with Moscow remain high.
