Kaylee Hottle, the young actress who won over audiences in the Godzilla vs. Kong films, has died at just 18 years old after a devastating car crash in Maryland.
The actress, best known for playing Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, was fatally injured in the early hours of July 21 after the car she was riding in veered off a road in Ijamsville, Maryland, and slammed into a culvert, according to officials.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said Hottle was one of two passengers inside a 1995 Honda Accord traveling on Windsor Road when the 19-year-old driver lost control.
According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle “traveled off the right side of the two-lane roadway and struck a culvert.”
Investigators said “excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.”
The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The other passenger reportedly refused medical treatment at the scene.
Hottle, however, suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed to a local trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation.
The tragedy quickly sent shockwaves through fans of the MonsterVerse films, where Hottle made a memorable impression as Jia, a young deaf girl who shared a powerful bond with Kong and communicated with him through sign language.
For many viewers, Hottle was the emotional heart of the franchise.
Her father, Joshua, later shared the crushing news in a livestream titled, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.”
In the emotional video, he explained in American Sign Language that he was flying from Texas to claim his daughter’s body after receiving the kind of phone call no parent ever wants to answer.
Joshua said officials told him Kaylee’s heart had stopped while she was being transported to the hospital following the crash.
Hottle’s death is especially heartbreaking because she had already become an important figure for deaf representation on the big screen.
The young actress, who was deaf, broke through in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, playing Jia opposite stars including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Millie Bobby Brown, and Alexander Skarsgård.
She returned for the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, once again portraying the character whose connection with Kong gave the blockbuster franchise an emotional center.
Before her Hollywood breakthrough, Hottle appeared in commercials for products used by the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Her casting was widely praised because Jia was not just a side character in a giant-monster spectacle. She was central to the story, serving as one of the few humans who could understand Kong and connect with him in a deeply personal way.
Hottle once opened up about the challenges of bringing the role to life, explaining that the script had to be translated into American Sign Language with help from her parents and another person.
In a 2021 interview with The Daily Moth, she said memorizing her signed lines was not the hardest part. The bigger challenge came when spoken dialogue had to be translated into ASL in a way that actually made sense.
“I was fine with memorizing the script and signing my lines, but the tough part was signing out the ‘spoken’ parts because we had to change it, and sometimes they’d tell us it was wrong but they didn’t understand that ASL changes almost everything,” she said.
She explained that what appeared simple on the page often had to be changed once it was translated visually.
“Because the interpreter said what I said. The producer and director would sometimes say ‘Don’t say that’ and want me to follow the script, but the signs for that sentence would be different in ASL,” Hottle said.
She recalled one misunderstanding involving ASL translation that delayed production, though she said the crew eventually understood.
Hottle also became a teacher on set, helping cast and crew members better understand how to communicate with deaf people.
“They had never interacted with a deaf person before,” she said. “I had to explain how to sign and use facial expressions. That was the hard part, but when they picked up on it, it was fine. I didn’t really have challenges, they were very accommodating. Some of the workers learned how to sign.”
The actress described Jia’s relationship with Kong as something rare and meaningful.
“Because Kong and my character had a special bond,” she said. “We signed with each other. Not with Godzilla, it was different.”
Her performance did not go unnoticed.
Alexander Skarsgård, one of her Godzilla vs. Kong co-stars, praised Hottle at the time and called her a “scene stealer.”
That praise followed her long after the movie’s release, as fans continued to point to Jia as one of the most memorable human characters in the franchise.
Now, the young actress’s life and career have been cut tragically short just as she was entering adulthood.
Hottle was only 18.
