Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has thanked the Turkish government and people for their continued support in restructuring, training and developing the capabilities of Somalia’s army.

A statement issued by the Somali presidency on social media said Mohamud inspected units of the Somali army’s special Gorgor forces, which have been trained by Turkey and recently completed advanced training.

Mohamud met the soldiers and received briefings from unit commanders and military officials on ongoing activities.

He also inspected administrative units, soldiers’ accommodation, the hospital and logistical facilities at the base, praising the soldiers’ overall condition, the services provided to them and their readiness to carry out national duties.

He praised the role of the Gorgor forces in defending the country and combating the militant group al-Shabaab, and instructed the units to remain prepared to fulfil their constitutional duties.

He urged the soldiers to continue working towards the Somali people’s goal of achieving a country free of terrorism.

He said Turkey had made important contributions, particularly to the establishment and development of special military units such as the Gorgor forces.
