A major NATO exercise off the coast of North Carolina has highlighted continued military cooperation between the United States and its European allies despite renewed political tensions over the alliance. The U.S.-hosted drills, part of the FLEETEX 250 exercises marking America’s 250th anniversary, involved forces from Norway, Britain, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Turkey and Canada.

Reuters observed training that included simulated ship boardings, anti-submarine warfare and amphibious operations, with commanders stressing the alliance’s ability to operate seamlessly together. British Commodore Maryla Ingham said the exercises demonstrated NATO’s flexibility and interoperability, while Norwegian officers highlighted realistic training alongside U.S. forces.

The drills come as President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have renewed criticism of European allies over defence spending, with the Pentagon reviewing the future of U.S. troop deployments in Europe. Tensions have also been heightened by disagreements over U.S. military operations involving Iran.

Despite the political uncertainty, defence experts said operational cooperation within NATO remains strong, noting that large-scale exercises are planned well in advance and continue unless specifically cancelled. However, analysts warned that any future reduction in the U.S. military presence in Europe could lead to fewer joint exercises, although congressional opposition may limit such changes.
