The European Parliament on Tuesday officially renamed one of its buildings to honour former Parliament President David Sassoli.
The ceremony was held from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on the Esplanade Solidarność 1980, between the Zweig building and the newly designated Sassoli building. Parliament President Roberta Metsola delivered the opening address, other dignitaries made remarks, and a commemorative plaque was unveiled.
Parliament’s Bureau, which comprises the president, vice presidents and quaestors, decided on Feb. 9, 2026, to rename the Treves building after the former president.
Sassoli’s legacy
Sassoli, an Italian journalist and politician, was elected president of the European Parliament on July 3, 2019, succeeding Antonio Tajani. He held the post until his death on Jan. 11, 2022, at age 65.
In one of his speeches, Sassoli said: “The European Union is not an accident of history (…). We are not an accident of history, but the children and grandchildren of those who managed to find the antidote to that nationalist degeneration that poisoned our history.”
