Traditional Easter products in Italy are becoming noticeably more expensive this year, with chocolate eggs recording significant price increases while the classic “colomba” cake remains relatively stable.

According to a recent survey by consumer group Altroconsumo, prices for chocolate Easter eggs have risen by as much as 19% for some brands, with an average increase of around 3.7%. By contrast, colomba cakes — a staple of Italian Easter celebrations — have seen only marginal rises of about 1%.

The findings point to what analysts describe as a “two-speed” Easter market, where price dynamics vary sharply depending on the product category. While raw materials such as cocoa have stabilised after previous spikes, retail prices have not fully adjusted, in part due to earlier high procurement costs and additional factors such as packaging, product size, and licensed merchandise included in chocolate eggs.

The study also highlights wide price disparities, with chocolate eggs ranging from budget options to premium products costing well over €100 per kilogram. Consumers are increasingly attentive to value for money, with around one in three expecting to spend more this Easter despite efforts to control household budgets.

More broadly, the data reflects ongoing pressure on Italian consumers, as seasonal traditions come under strain from persistent inflation in food and retail sectors.
