Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that the war involving Iran risks setting the entire Middle East “on fire” if it is not halted, urging that diplomacy be given a chance to resolve the conflict.

Speaking in parliament, the NATO member’s president said the conflict must be stopped before it spreads across the region. He added that Turkey was acting cautiously and maintaining contact with all sides in an effort to end the war.

NATO air defences recently intercepted two Iranian missiles heading towards southern Turkey, where the alliance and the United States operate air and radar bases, prompting the bloc to reinforce its defences.

Turkey had earlier offered to mediate between the sides before the U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran began 12 days ago.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Özgür Özel accused Erdoğan of avoiding direct criticism of Donald Trump in order to preserve their personal ties.
