Beloved British actor Donald Douglas, best known to modern audiences for his role in Bridget Jones’s Diary, has died aged 92 following a short illness.

Douglas passed away last week while in hospital, surrounded by family and close friends. A funeral notice shared online confirmed he died on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in Albi, France, where he had been living in later years.

Born in Falkirk, Scotland, in 1933, Douglas trained at Edinburgh College of Art before honing his craft at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He broke into television through adaptations of Sir Walter Scott novels, including Redgauntletand Rob Roy, laying the foundation for a long and respected career across film, television, and theatre.

He became widely recognized for playing Admiral Darcy, the quietly formidable father of Mark Darcy, portrayed by Colin Firth, in Bridget Jones’s Diary. The role earned Douglas a new generation of fans and cemented his place in British pop culture.

Beyond Bridget Jones, Douglas built an impressive résumé that included appearances in Doctor Who, where he played Vural in the 1970s serial The Sontaran Experiment, and Poldark, portraying Captain Malcolm McNeil. He also made a brief but memorable appearance in EastEnders in 1995.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Emma Temple, their children Amy, Liza and Jodie, and five grandchildren.

Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from friends and colleagues. Close friend Meredith Wheeler remembered him as far more than an actor, praising his talents as an artist, sculptor, and ceramic restorer, as well as his love of cooking, gardening, horses, and dogs. She described him as having “an impish sense of humour and a generous heart.”

Actor Toby Hadoke also paid tribute, calling Douglas a performer who always brought “heft and class” to his roles, adding that his performances in Doctor WhoPoldark, and Bridget Jones showcased his range and quiet authority.

Even after relocating to France, Douglas continued working in theatre and film. His final screen credit is believed to be the 2021 drama Nobody Has To Know, starring alongside Michelle Fairley and Bouli Lanners.

With a career spanning decades and genres, Donald Douglas leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and a reputation as one of Britain’s quietly dependable acting greats.
