King Charles could have an unexpected opportunity to bring Prince William and Prince Harry back together — and it may come through the woman who remains deeply important to both brothers nearly three decades after her death.

A thanksgiving service honoring Princess Diana is reportedly being discussed ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death on Aug. 31, 2027, with royal sources suggesting the occasion could provide William and Harry with a rare reason to stand together again.

However, there is an important distinction: Buckingham Palace has not announced a service, and there is no confirmation that either prince has agreed to participate.

According to recent British media reports, Charles has nevertheless “raised no objection” to the idea of holding a formal service honoring his former wife.

If it happens, the gathering could become one of the most closely watched royal events in years.

A Rare Chance to Put William and Harry in the Same Room

William and Harry’s strained relationship has remained one of the most persistent dramas surrounding the Royal Family.

The brothers have appeared at some of the same family events since their relationship deteriorated, but scenes of the two publicly interacting have become increasingly rare.

That is why a ceremony devoted to Diana could carry unusual significance.

Unlike a summit specifically intended to repair their relationship, the proposed service would give both men a reason to attend without requiring either brother to publicly declare that a reconciliation is underway.

Royal commentator Richard Eden, writing for the Daily Mail, suggested a Diana service could offer precisely that kind of neutral setting.

“This would be an inspirational way to remember Diana,” a source told the newspaper.

Another royal source claimed Charles had “raised no objection” to the proposal.

For now, those comments remain anonymously sourced reports rather than an official announcement from the palace.

There Is Already a Blueprint

A memorial service marking a major anniversary of Diana’s death would not be unprecedented.

William and Harry organized an official Service of Thanksgiving for their mother on Aug. 31, 2007, exactly 10 years after her death.

The hour-long ceremony was held at the Guards’ Chapel at Wellington Barracks in London and attended by roughly 500 guests.

Both princes participated in the service.

The Royal Family said at the time that William and Harry personally helped oversee the arrangements along with Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, and her sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

Music selected for the ceremony reflected Diana’s personal tastes, including some of her favorite classical pieces and hymns.

Members of the Royal Family attended alongside Diana’s relatives, friends, former staff members and representatives from charities and organizations she supported.

A similar event in 2027 would therefore have a clear historical precedent.

Diana’s 30th Anniversary Could Put Her Sons Back in the Spotlight

Princess Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, after a car crash in Paris. She was 36.

William was 15 at the time, while Harry was just 12.

Both men have spoken over the years about the profound impact their mother’s death had on their lives.

They have also repeatedly honored her legacy.

One of their most memorable appearances together came on July 1, 2021, when William and Harry unveiled a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace on what would have been their mother’s 60th birthday.

The ceremony took place months after Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey and at a time when reports of a deepening family rift were already dominating headlines.

Despite the tension surrounding them, William and Harry stood side by side for the unveiling.

The brothers said at the time that they remembered Diana’s “love, strength and character” and hoped the statue would help keep her memory alive.

Their relationship has appeared to grow even more distant in the years since.

The two were together publicly following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022, when William, Kate, Harry and Meghan made a surprise appearance outside Windsor Castle to greet mourners.

William and Harry were also both reported to have attended the 2024 funeral of their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, although reports said they kept their distance from one another.

Harry Is Considering His Own Diana Project

The renewed discussion surrounding Diana comes as Harry is reportedly considering several ways of honoring his mother in 2027.

One possibility is a documentary.

People reported in September that Harry has been exploring projects connected to the anniversary and has contacted relatives and friends who knew Diana.

But despite more sensational claims elsewhere that a major television production is already underway, no documentary has been officially finalized or confirmed.

That distinction matters.

At this stage, Harry appears to be considering several possibilities rather than moving ahead with a completed production.

William, meanwhile, has generally become more guarded about publicly discussing his mother.

The brothers previously participated together in the 2017 documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy,” released to mark 20 years since her death.

William indicated around that time that he did not expect to speak so extensively about Diana again.

A Service Could Avoid a Public Battle Over Diana’s Legacy

That history may be one reason some royal observers see a formal memorial service as a potentially less controversial way for the family to mark the anniversary.

Rather than William and Harry participating in separate television projects or competing public tributes, both could potentially contribute to the same ceremony.

William could give a reading. Harry could participate in another part of the service. Charles could attend without making the event about his sons’ fractured relationship.

None of that has been confirmed.

But a structured service similar to the one held in 2007 could allow the Royal Family to focus attention on Diana herself rather than another round of headlines about Harry and William.

Whether it would actually repair their relationship is another question entirely.

Years of Royal Family Tension

Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working members of the Royal Family in 2020 and eventually settled in California.

The family dispute became considerably more public afterward.

Harry and Meghan made a series of allegations about royal life during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, including discussions surrounding race, security and Meghan’s treatment inside the institution.

Harry later provided an even more detailed account of his relationship with William and other members of the family in his 2023 memoir “Spare.”

William has largely avoided publicly responding to his brother’s individual claims.

The result has been years of speculation over whether the brothers might eventually reconcile.

A Diana tribute would not automatically accomplish that.

It could, however, create something the brothers have rarely had in recent years — a deeply personal event where neither man would need to make the first public move toward the other.

All Eyes Could Turn to August 2027

No official guest list, location or ceremony has been announced for Diana’s 30th anniversary.

There is also no confirmation that William and Harry have committed to appearing together.

For now, the proposed thanksgiving service remains exactly that — a proposal reportedly circulating around the Royal Family.

But history makes the idea plausible.

William and Harry came together for Diana’s 10th anniversary in 2007. They reunited for her statue unveiling in 2021. And despite everything that has happened between them, honoring their mother remains one of the strongest connections the two princes still publicly share.

If a service does take place in August 2027, the attention may initially be on Diana.

But the moment William and Harry enter the same room, much of the world will inevitably be watching to see whether their mother’s memory can once again bring the estranged brothers together.
