A manhunt is underway in Berlin after a car drove into a crowd attending the city’s Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations on Saturday night, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others.
The incident happened at around 10pm on Lennéstrasse, where the vehicle struck pedestrians before crashing into a tree. The driver then reportedly fled the scene.
Berlin police said they had identified a suspect, named as 21-year-old Abdul B., who is “known to police” and believed to have links to Islamist circles. Officers released an image of the suspect and warned the public not to approach him, saying he may be armed and dangerous.
Three people remain in a life-threatening condition.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the incident as a “despicable act”, saying hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully to celebrate tolerance and diversity. He described the attack as an assault on society.
The Pride parade was cancelled following the incident.
