Xi heads to Pyongyang, Moscow on his mind

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to North Korea will be delicate and difficult. The relationship no longer resembles that of “lips and teeth” from the Korean War era — Korean lips and Chinese teeth. It has evolved into far more complex and contradictory ties, not one-sided but full of thorns for the Chinese.

North Korea is, in fact, the single greatest beneficiary of the war in Ukraine. In exchange for supplying weapons and troops, it has obtained Russian technology that has enabled a strategic leap in its missile and nuclear capabilities. (Just ahead of Xi’s visit, North Korea announced that its nuclear program is “irreversible.”)

This leap, however, has created two serious issues for China, which had naively encouraged North Korean support for Russia to prevent its collapse and the dangerous fallout that would follow.

The first is that it has alarmed South Korea and Japan, pushing them into a rearmament race. The North Korean threat is real, and, as such, it provides a genuine justification for the two neighbors to rearm. It is against North Korea and against the more real but unspoken and unspeakable threat posed by China.

The second problem is that the political bond between North Korea and Russia has deepened, placing a significant burden on China’s political advancement in Russia. If North Korea becomes like eastern Belarus, it would pose a threat to Beijing, perhaps greater than the growth of Chinese interests in Siberia poses to Moscow.

Naturally, it is precisely for this reason that neither Russia nor North Korea is ready to give up this new relationship, despite both being dependent on China. And, indeed, South Korea and Japan’s rearmament becomes, in this light, a new lever for Moscow and Pyongyang over Beijing.

This pressure may outweigh China’s possible advantage of playing the indirect North Korean wild card against whatever Beijing doesn’t like, mostly Taiwan, the island, de facto independent but de jure part of one China, where the nationalists fled after the communists took over the mainland.

Xi is therefore likely to go to North Korea, probably not in pursuit of a complete solution to the dilemma in which he finds himself trapped, but rather to shake up the bilateral relationship. So, some form of rapprochement — a reopening of dialogue between North Korea and America — could give China a little breathing room.

After that, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could meet Trump to reach a deal on nuclear weapons. It is unclear what kind of agreement could be reached. Perhaps the visit is also meant to gauge what is feasible, but a North Korean deal could serve as a diplomatic bargaining chip to pressure the US into leaning on South Korea and Japan.

This is a puzzle with millions of pieces all in motion, so the chance of anything fitting together would be something of a miracle.

North Korea has not historically served China well. The intervention in North Korea in the 1950s cost Mao Zedong very dearly. He lost his son and heir, killed in an American bombing, and had to forfeit any plan to conquer Taiwan.

North Korea dealt the newborn Chinese regime two systemic blows to its future: the end of an imperial line of succession and the failure to destroy its existential enemy, Nationalist China, which, from Taiwan, challenged the legitimacy of communist rule in Beijing.

This trip cannot be a non-event — at least not entirely. But whatever the outcome, it remains unclear whether it will be enough to get US President Donald Trump to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and whether that will be sufficient to assuage South Korean or Japanese fears.

That something is moving in this direction is nonetheless significant. It signals that China is unhappy with what is happening on the Korean Peninsula, that the situation has not been well managed — quite the contrary — and that the top leader must step in personally to set things right.

The Mao-Xi parallel

Xi came to power by skillfully moving every lever of China’s internal political machinery with undisputed ability. Mao had gained power and authority by managing war and foreign policy.

He had understood the connection between winning local consensus — among the peasants, the flesh and blood of China at that time — and the various internal and external actors stirring China.

He succeeded in purging the communist intellectuals, while also convincing non-communist intellectuals of his sincerity. Over the course of more than 20 years, he played Japanese against nationalists, Russians against Americans, each one against each other, and all for himself, to emerge in 1949 as the leader of China.

His game of cross-betrayals was blocked by the Russians, precisely in Korea. Russia’s Joseph Stalin compelled him to defend Kim Il Sung — then nearly overwhelmed by the American advance — thereby severing every thread connecting him to the US and dashing his hopes of conquering Taiwan. After the Chinese intervention in Korea, the Americans deployed their fleet to defend the island.

The official reason for the Korean intervention was that China had better have a buffer between itself and a US ally. In hindsight, it’s unclear whether the buffer was for China or the USSR, and whether the neighborly ties with a US ally would not have advanced China’s cause better than Soviet chains.

Mao’s authority — though he proved incapable of governing China and developing it economically — was never called into question, precisely because of his genius in international politics.

Xi, in some ways, finds himself working in reverse. He has shown he knows how to seize, maintain and expand his power domestically, but his judgment in foreign policy has shown flaws. This may have been the fault of the military, which in China bears primary responsibility for shaping the country’s foreign strategy.

Now, with the army purged and brought to its knees, it falls to Xi to see whether he can untangle the Gordian knot he holds in his hands.

Kim Il Sung sank Mao’s hopes; will his grandson salvage Xi’s? Over 20 years ago, the Chinese Journal “Strategy and Management was allegedly closed after it published an article suggesting the possibility of a Chinese invasion of North Korea. At the time, the six-party talks on North Korea were facing resistance in Pyongyang.

The idea, never made public, has circulated in Beijing for decades. An invasion of Taiwan is near impossible; a land invasion of North Korea, especially if backed from the south, would be a much easier proposition. The North Korean nuclear program could be directed against China as well as against Western enemies.

Rumors about Kim’s possible death in 2020, at the onset of the Covid crisis, might have been linked to a sudden tension between China and North Korea.

It would be impossible to untangle all of China’s problems with North Korea, especially given that over the past 25 years, the situation has grown far more complicated. But Xi could certainly ease a few of them.

With decades of hindsight, one could say that Stalin set an impossible trap for China with North Korea, and that trap has been leveraged again by Russian President Vladimir Putin. To get out of it, Xi may need a very different mindset.

Some 80 years ago, Mao was held prisoner in Moscow, unsure whether he’d ever go back. Stalin, who had given Mao victory by backing him in Manchuria when he was on the verge of annihilation, was ready to replace him with a more pliable leader. Now, Xi is at least in a stronger position vis-à-vis both Russia and North Korea.

You are here: Home / All RECIPES / Crispy Vegan Baked “Honey” Mustard Tofu Tenders

These Crispy Vegan Baked “Honey” Mustard Tofu Tenders are golden, crunchy, slightly sweet, tangy, and completely plant-based. Extra-firm tofu is coated in a simple batter, rolled in crispy panko breadcrumbs, baked until beautifully crisp, then brushed with a sweet mustard glaze made with maple syrup or agave.

They are perfect as a snack, appetizer, party finger food, or even a fun meatless dinner. Serve them with extra vegan honey mustard sauce, fries, salad, roasted vegetables, or tuck them into wraps and sandwiches for an easy plant-based meal.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

These tofu tenders are a must-try because they are crispy on the outside, tender inside, and packed with flavor. The “honey” mustard sauce gives them that perfect sweet-and-tangy balance without using real honey, making the recipe completely vegan.

They are also baked instead of fried, which means less mess and less oil, but still plenty of crunch. With simple pantry ingredients like flour, cornstarch, panko, mustard, and maple syrup, this recipe is easy enough for beginners and tasty enough to impress anyone who thinks tofu is boring.

What Makes These Tofu Tenders So Crispy?

The secret is the combination of extra-firm tofu, a cornstarch-based batter, and panko breadcrumbs. Cornstarch helps the batter bake up light and crisp, while panko creates a crunchy golden coating. A light spray or brush of oil before baking helps the outside crisp beautifully in the oven.

Pressing the tofu is also important. The less moisture in the tofu, the better the coating sticks and the crispier the tenders become.

Ingredients

For the Tofu Tenders

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika, optional
  • ¾ cup water, plus more if needed
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil, for brushing or spraying

For the Vegan “Honey” Mustard Sauce

  • ¼ cup maple syrup or agave syrup
  • ¼ cup yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of salt
  • Dash of black pepper

Ingredient Notes

Extra-Firm Tofu

Extra-firm tofu works best because it holds its shape and has a meaty texture. Avoid soft or silken tofu because it will break apart too easily.

Flour

All-purpose flour creates the base of the batter. For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.

Cornstarch

Cornstarch is one of the key ingredients for crispiness. It helps the batter become lighter and crunchier as it bakes.

Baking Powder

Baking powder gives the batter a little lift, making the coating less dense.

Panko Breadcrumbs

Panko breadcrumbs are larger and crispier than regular breadcrumbs, which makes them ideal for baked tofu tenders.

Maple Syrup or Agave

Since this is a vegan version of honey mustard, maple syrup or agave syrup gives the sauce that sweet “honey-like” flavor.

Mustard

Yellow mustard gives a classic honey mustard flavor, while Dijon mustard gives a sharper, more grown-up flavor. You can use either one or a mix of both.

Step 1: Make the Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup or agave, mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth.

Set the sauce aside while you prepare the tofu. You will use it later to glaze the tenders after baking.

Step 2: Press the Tofu

Drain the tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.

Place something heavy on top, such as a pan or a few books, and press for about 10 to 20 minutes.

Pressing removes excess moisture and helps the tofu bake up firmer and crispier.

Step 3: Slice the Tofu

Cut the pressed tofu into thick strips, about 1 inch wide.

Try to keep the pieces similar in size so they bake evenly.

Step 4: Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and paprika.

Slowly add the water and whisk until you have a smooth batter.

The batter should be thick enough to coat the tofu but not so thick that it clumps. If it is too thick, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 5: Coat the Tofu

Place the panko breadcrumbs in a shallow bowl or plate.

Dip each tofu strip into the batter, letting any excess drip off.

Then press the tofu into the panko breadcrumbs until fully coated on all sides.

Place each coated tofu tender on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Bake Until Crispy

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Lightly brush or spray the coated tofu tenders with neutral oil.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the tofu is golden, crisp, and firm.

Step 7: Add the “Honey” Mustard Glaze

Remove the tofu tenders from the oven.

Brush or spoon the vegan honey mustard sauce over the crispy tofu pieces.

Return them to the oven for another 5 to 8 minutes so the sauce can set slightly and become sticky.

Serve warm with extra sauce on the side.

Tips for the Best Tofu Tenders

Press the Tofu First

Do not skip pressing the tofu. Removing moisture helps the coating stick and gives the tofu a better texture.

Use Panko Breadcrumbs

Panko makes the coating extra crunchy. Regular breadcrumbs will work, but the tenders will not be as crisp.

Do Not Overcrowd the Pan

Leave space between each tofu strip. If the pieces are too close together, they will steam instead of crisp.

Flip Halfway Through Baking

Flipping helps both sides become golden and crunchy.

Add the Sauce Near the End

Do not coat the tofu with the sauce before baking from the beginning. Add it at the end so the tenders stay crispy while still getting that sweet mustard flavor.

Serving Ideas

These crispy tofu tenders are delicious with:

  • Extra vegan honey mustard sauce
  • Sweet potato fries
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Garden salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Quinoa salad
  • Rice bowls
  • Wraps
  • Burger buns
  • Pickles
  • Vegan ranch
  • Spicy mayo
  • Barbecue sauce

They also make a great appetizer for parties, game day, movie night, or a fun plant-based dinner.

Variations

Spicy Mustard Tofu Tenders

Add cayenne pepper, chili powder, or hot sauce to the batter for a spicy kick.

Gluten-Free Tofu Tenders

Use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs.

Herby Tofu Tenders

Add dried thyme, oregano, parsley, or rosemary to the batter or breadcrumbs.

Cheesy Vegan Tofu Tenders

Mix nutritional yeast into the panko breadcrumbs for a cheesy, savory flavor.

Sesame Crunch Tenders

Add sesame seeds to the breadcrumb coating for extra crunch and nutty flavor.

Dijon Maple Tofu Tenders

Use Dijon mustard and maple syrup for a deeper, tangier glaze.

Make-Ahead Instructions

You can prepare the tofu tenders ahead of time by pressing, slicing, battering, and breading the tofu up to 24 hours in advance.

Place the coated tofu strips in an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to bake.

When ready to serve, bake as directed, then brush with the honey mustard sauce during the final few minutes.

Storage Instructions

Store leftover baked tofu tenders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

They will soften slightly as they sit, but they can be crisped up again in the oven or air fryer.

Reheating Instructions

For the best texture, reheat tofu tenders in the oven at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until warmed through and crispy again.

You can also reheat them in an air fryer at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes.

Avoid microwaving if possible, because it will make the coating soft.

Can You Freeze Tofu Tenders?

Yes. You can freeze them before or after baking.

To freeze unbaked tofu tenders, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until firm. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container.

To bake from frozen, add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

You can also freeze fully baked tofu tenders for up to 3 months, then reheat in the oven until hot and crispy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these tofu tenders gluten-free?

Yes. Use gluten-free all-purpose flour and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs.

Can I use regular breadcrumbs instead of panko?

Yes, but panko gives the crispiest texture. Regular breadcrumbs will create a finer, softer coating.

What type of tofu is best?

Extra-firm tofu is best because it holds its shape and has the right texture for tenders.

Can I air fry these tofu tenders?

Yes. Air fry at 375°F for about 12 to 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy. Brush with the sauce during the last few minutes.

Can I make the sauce less sweet?

Yes. Reduce the maple syrup or agave and add extra mustard if you prefer a tangier sauce.

Why is my tofu not crispy?

The tofu may have too much moisture, the pan may be overcrowded, or the coating may not have enough oil. Press the tofu well, space the pieces apart, and lightly spray or brush with oil before baking.

The EU foreign policy chief on Sunday condemned the killing of another UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) soldier earlier this week and renewed the bloc’s calls for accountability, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, Kaja Kallas said the EU urges all actors to fully abide by the terms of the agreement between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah and reject “any additional conditions from Hezbollah.”

The statement underlined that the Lebanese people are paying a “heavy and unacceptable” humanitarian and socio-economic price from the continued escalation and airstrikes.

“The EU demands the full implementation of UNSCR (UN Security Council Resolution) 1701 calling for the respect of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by Israel and the disarmament of non-state armed groups, including Hezbollah.”

Kallas also reaffirmed the bloc’s full support to UNIFIL and its mandate, saying the EU “strongly condemns all attacks against its personnel, including the killing of another UNIFIL soldier in the attacks of 4 June, the seventh peacekeeper to have died since March, and extends its deep condolences to his family.”

“The killing of peacekeepers is a violation of international law and must be met with full accountability,” the statement added.

School shooting survivor sues AI gun detection firm after system failed to spot weapon

School shooting survivor sues AI gun detection firm after system failed to spot weapon

The injured teenage survivor of a January 2025 shooting at a Nashville, Tennessee high school recently sued the manufacturer of an “AI gun detection” system that failed to detect the handgun that left two dead, including the shooter.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed in Davidson County court last month, the security company Omnilert either knew or should have known that there were “significant operational limitations in its gun detection system that could result in detection failures during actual emergencies, including limitations based on camera placement, proximity of the weapon to camera sensors, camera angle, lighting, and weapon visibility.”

Omnilert cofounder Ara Bagdasarian declined Ars’ invitation to answer questions about the lawsuit. System Integrations, the other defendant in the case, which resold the Omnilert system, also did not respond to Ars’ request for comment.

In 2023, the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board approved a contract worth over $1 million to install an AI detection layer on top of its district-wide network of cameras and related security infrastructure.

MNPS spokesperson Sean Braisted said in a press conference following the January 2025 shooting that due to where the shooter was in relation to the cameras, the imagery “wasn’t close enough to get an accurate read and to activate that alarm.”

The lawsuit frequently cites from marketing copy on Omnilert’s own website (as preserved on the Internet Archive just days before the shooting), alleging that the company oversold its capabilities:

Omnilert further represented that AI-powered visual gun detection “could have mitigated or prevented tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School” by identifying threats earlier—invoking one of the nation’s most devastating school shootings to convey that its product would prevent similar tragedies…

Omnilert made no mention of false alarms, false positives, or detection limitations of any kind on its pre-shooting commercial website.

Using a specific set of situational conditions under which the detection system is effective is questionable, Chris Smith, one of the plaintiff’s attorneys, told Ars.

Smith was skeptical when he first heard about the concept of AI gun detection.

“I just thought that it was kind of bullshit. I have a Tesla, and I think Tesla’s self-driving is bullshit,” he said. “It’s not ready for prime time! How could you possibly be entrusting of that? That’s your plan to protect kids from school shootings? Why is this any better than a metal detector?”

Some critics have raised concerns similar to Smith’s, noting that such public money could have gone elsewhere.

“I’ve never seen a school shooting where there was a lack of notification,” said David Riedman, an education and security expert who maintains the K-12 School Shooting Database.

The money that MNPS spent on deploying these detection systems, he added, “could have gone to a counselor or something else to a kid in crisis. Every decision that you make is pointing away resources from something else.”

Smith also said that, to his knowledge, this is the first lawsuit of its kind brought against Omnilert or a similar company.

“I thought it was important beyond Mr. Hanin’s own injuries to raise awareness of the whole situation,” he said.

The lawsuit was first reported by WSMV in Nashville.

Daughter of 2028 Olympics Chair Dreams of Competing in LA — for Israel

Daughter of 2028 Olympics Chair Dreams of Competing in LA — for Israel

Casey Wasserman, the entertainment super-agent, has attracted his fair share of controversy as the head of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee.

In addition to passionate debates about the Olympics themselves — the geopolitics of the Games and their effect on local hosts — Wasserman has come in for criticism over his ties to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, his support for Israel, and the potential that the Games might bring him profits through his role as a talent manager for entertainment stars.

The controversies, especially revelations about his relationship with a member of Epstein’s inner circle, nearly led to Wasserman’s ouster from his role atop LA28, the Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee.

Now, another personal wrinkle is coming to light: Wasserman’s daughter, Stella, is training to compete for the Israeli equestrian team at the 2028 Games.

The participation of Wasserman’s daughter in the Games could create an awkward dynamic for the local Olympic chief.

Stella Wasserman, 21, is training to compete with the Israeli team in the show jumping competition, according to a recent profile in World of Show Jumping, a trade publication covering the sport. Instagram accounts for Stella Wasserman and her mother, Laura Ziffren Wasserman, posted in the wake of the article to celebrate Stella’s plans to compete with the Israeli team.

There’s a very real possibility that the man responsible for orchestrating an American Olympic games will have a child competing for another country that has become an international pariah due to its genocide in Gaza and wars with Lebanon and Iran — a team that is likely to face protests in LA. (Casey Wasserman, Stella Wasserman, LA28, and the Israeli Olympic committee did not respond to requests for comment.)

Casey Wasserman is himself an outspoken supporter of Israel. In December, he took a trip to Israel during which he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and pledged that the safety of athletes, and particularly Israeli athletes, was his “number one concern,” according to Algemeiner, a right-wing, New York-based newspaper covering Jewish issues.

“If you’re claiming that this thing that you’re promoting so heavily is going to bring all these benefits to Los Angeles, but you’re also promoting the interests of a foreign genocidal state — and on top of that your daughter is representing that state in the Games — that’s a conflict,” said Miguel Camnitzer, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace Los Angeles. “Somebody else, without those very personal connections to Israel, might be able to make a different call, but he’s unable to.”

Wasserman, a longtime local powerbroker and grandson of Hollywood Golden Age tycoon Lew Wasserman, has been central to bringing the Games to Los Angeles, a role that has come under increased scrutiny due to his ties to Epstein and the late pedophile’s former companion, convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.

While his connections to the Epstein world were known to some degree for years  — he rode with Bill Clinton on Epstein’s private jet for a humanitarian mission to Africa — the release of the so-called Epstein files earlier this year revealed graphic sexual emails between Wasserman and Maxwell. The revelations sparked a backlash from some of the artists represented by his eponymous talent agency, which in March changed its name to The Team; Wasserman also announced he would be selling the company.

This week, Wasserman reaffirmed that he has no plans to step down as the chair of LA28.

Olympian Hypocrisies

Despite her young age, Stella Wasserman is an accomplished show jumper and owns at least four competition horses, according to a report in the Chronicle of the Horse.

It is common for athletes from one country to compete for a country in which they hold dual citizenship; the International Olympic Committee requires that competitors be nationals of the countries on whose behalf they are competing.

Amid the genocide in Gaza, the Israel connection underscores arguments from critics of the Olympics who say that the Games whitewash human rights abuses by nations taking part — and that international approaches to the Games foster a global double standard that penalizes some nations while allowing others to compete. In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian teams were barred from competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics; Israel has faced no such sanction.

The yearslong campaign by Wasserman and others — including former Mayor Eric Garcetti — to host the Olympics in Los Angeles has met with stiff opposition from local activists. Forming a coalition, dubbed NOlympics, the activists sought to call attention to the ways in which they say the Games would exacerbate issues of affordability, surveillance, and anti-immigrant policing by federal law enforcement.

“Mega-events like the Olympics or the World Cup don’t necessarily create problems from whole cloth, but they accelerate them.”

“When we started organizing against the Olympics 10 years ago, LA was already reeling from homelessness, housing shortages, brutal policing, and ICE. And 10 years later these issues are all worse,” said Jonny Coleman, an organizer with NOlympics LA. “Mega-events like the Olympics or the World Cup don’t necessarily create problems from whole cloth, but they accelerate them.”

In December, LA28 announced it had raised more than $2 billion in sponsorship revenue, according to Reuters. If the costs of the Games exceed what the Olympic committee is able to fundraise, however, Los Angeles would be on the hook for the first $270 million of over-cost expenses, with the next $270 million to be covered by the state of California.

The Games, activists said, could be a boon for Wasserman. Wasserman chaired a host committee to bring the Super Bowl to LA in 2022; his client Kendrick Lamar was featured in the halftime show — a coveted slot not least for the millions the exposure can bring.

For Coleman, Casey Wasserman’s relationship to Ghislaine Maxwell and Stella Wasserman’s potential competition on behalf of Israel only further highlights the corrupt nature of the Olympics.

“We know these mega-events are a way to legitimize awful regimes,” said Coleman. “It’s disgusting, but I don’t really care about the supposed integrity of the sports, personally. So yeah, let her play — why not?”

Pro-Palestinian activists disrupt German Armed Forces Day events in Munich, Unna

Pro-Palestinian activists on Saturday disrupted German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) Day events in the cities of Munich and Unna, staging protests against Germany’s military support for Israel and arms exports, Anadolu reports.

“Supporters of ‘Peacefully against Genocide’ staged peaceful protests today in Unna and Munich on German Armed Forces Day,” organizers said in a statement sent to Anadolu.

They said military equipment displayed during the events was primarily manufactured by Rheinmetall, a German defense company that supplies weapons and ammunition to Israel and “plans to open a new factory RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF BERLIN in July.”

Video footage shared on social media showed activists climbing onto a tank and unfurling a banner reading “Genocide with German weapons.”

One activist, identified as Hannes, said the demonstrations were intended to draw attention to the use of German-made weapons in conflicts abroad.

“Here on Bundeswehr Day, equipment and weapons are put on display. The Bundeswehr is celebrated; killing machines are glorified. And all this while the weapons on display here are exported to kill,” Hannes said.

“By supplying weapons to the Israeli state, the German federal government and arms industry are complicit in every crime Israel commits,” he added.

Kosovo to hold another parliamentary election amid deadlock over new president

Kosovo to hold another parliamentary election amid deadlock over new president

Kosovo will hold a parliamentary election on Sunday, its third in just 18 months, after its political parties failed ‌to reach a compromise on choosing a new president.

The tiny Balkan nation, Europe’s youngest, has aspirations to join the European Union but has had no functioning government for much of the last year as its fractured parliaments failed to elect first a speaker and then a new head of state.

No opinion polls have been conducted recently but analysts predict victory again for Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s Vetevendosje party. However, he will still need to reach a compromise with opposition parties to secure the two-thirds majority required to elect a new president, they say.

Kurti’s party won 51.1% of the vote in the last election in December but could not agree with other parties on a candidate for the largely ceremonial presidency, triggering the dissolution of parliament in April and another snap election.

“We can have 10 rounds of elections, but if there is no political will to sit down and find a deal, there is no solution. I don’t see that will among the parties,” said Eugen Cakolli, a researcher at Kosovo’s Democratic Institute (KDI).

DEADLOCK TO CONTINUE?

Cakolli said Kurti’s party would need to win more than 60% of the vote to secure the election of its preferred candidates ‌for parliamentary speaker and president, adding that this was an unlikely scenario.

“This Sunday’s election may not be the only one this year and holding four rounds within two years would be the worst scenario imaginable,” he added.

The EU has urged politicians in Kosovo – which declared independence from Serbia in 2008 – to create strong institutions that can deliver the reforms needed to join the bloc.

“The EU can support Kosovo, but it cannot do Kosovo’s homework,” European Council President Antonio Costa said during a visit to Pristina on Wednesday.

Kurti’s party first came to power in 2021 with a more nationalist, welfare-focused agenda. Like all parties in Kosovo, it has a pro-Western orientation. It also opposes further concessions to Serbia, with which relations remain strained.

Kosovo’s election commission has said more than 900 candidates from 17 parties and three coalition groups are competing for seats in the 120-seat parliament.

About 2.1 million voters are registered – more than Kosovo’s 1.6 million resident population due to a large diaspora, which is based mostly in western Europe and tends to favour Kurti’s party.

Many Kosovars just want political stability.

“I am tired of voting,” pensioner Sadri Alija said in the capital Pristina. “May Allah unite our politicians – they are only thinking of themselves.”

Veteran Actor Killed in Horror Stabbing Outside Home

Veteran actor James Handy, best known for his work in Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji and a long list of hit TV crime dramas, was killed in a shocking stabbing outside a Los Angeles-area home.

Handy, 81, was allegedly stabbed in the chest on the front lawn of his girlfriend’s home in Tarzana, California, before later dying at a hospital.

Now, disturbing new details have emerged about the moments after the attack.

According to reports, the suspected killer, Michael Gledhill, 44, was captured on a neighbor’s doorbell camera walking calmly down the street away from the scene.

Gledhill is the adult son of Handy’s girlfriend and reportedly lived at the home with his mother.

The chilling footage, first obtained by Fox 11 Los Angeles, allegedly shows Gledhill strolling away from the house moments after Handy had been stabbed and left dying in the front yard.

But in a bizarre twist, Gledhill later returned to the home.

A police report states that the suspect “flagged down nearby responding officers” and told them he was the person they were looking for.

Officers had already been called to the area after a disturbing 911 call reported violence at the home.

According to reports, the unidentified caller told dispatchers: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether Gledhill was the person who made that call.

When officers arrived, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to his chest.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics rushed the actor to a nearby hospital, but he could not be saved.

Gledhill was arrested and charged with murder.

Police said the motive remains under investigation, but detectives believe the stabbing was an isolated incident. Authorities also said there does not appear to be any continuing danger to the public.

The brutal killing has stunned those who knew Handy, a longtime working actor whose career stretched across nearly five decades.

His agent, Pam Ellis-Evans, confirmed his death and paid tribute to him in an emotional statement.

“With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” she said.

She added: “I could not have asked for a more talented, humble or gracious client and friend than James Handy.”

Handy was born in New York and began his acting career in 1977 with a role on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope.

His big-screen debut came in the 1981 military drama Taps, which starred Tom Cruise, Sean Penn and Giancarlo Esposito.

Over the years, Handy became a familiar face to movie and TV fans.

He appeared as an exterminator in the 1995 family adventure film Jumanji and had a role in the 1990 horror-comedy Arachnophobia.

He also played a doctor in the 2017 Wolverine film Logan.

More recently, Handy appeared in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, where he played the bartender Jimmy.

His television credits were just as impressive.

Handy appeared in NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: NY, NYPD Blue, Law & Order, The Closer, Cold Case and The X-Files.

For decades, he was the kind of actor audiences recognized instantly, even if they did not always know his name.

Now, fans and colleagues are mourning a respected performer whose life ended in a horrifying act of violence.

Gledhill remains accused of murder as investigators continue working to determine what led to the deadly confrontation.

EU Green Transition Sparks Fears of Factory Closures and Employment Losses

EU Green Transition Sparks Fears of Factory Closures and Employment Losses

EU countries risk mass job losses in the coming years as high energy costs, industrial restructuring and the green transition weigh on the economy, the European Commission is set to warn.

The figures, seen by POLITICO, will appear in the European Semester Spring Package, which sets out the Commission’s economic and policy recommendations for EU countries and is due to be presented Wednesday. They underscore growing concern in Brussels about the scale of the economic challenges facing the bloc.

“Europe’s competitiveness will not be built by technology, capital or financial regulation alone,” Commission Executive Vice President for Skills Roxana Mînzatu told POLITICO. “It will be built by people, the skills they develop and the opportunities we create for them to contribute fully to our economies and societies.”

With the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran showing no sign of ending and continuing to affect oil prices, the Commission projects that energy price pressures in 2026 will put as many as 560,000 jobs at risk. The sectors most exposed include construction, metals, chemicals and transport.

Weaker economic activity has forced the Commission to revise its joblessness projections. Last autumn, the Commission predicted that unemployment would stand at 5.9 percent in 2026 and 5.8 percent in 2027. It now believes it will be 6 percent in both years.

The Commission also expects governments to take on more debt, with the general government balance for all 27 EU countries widening from -3.1 percent of GDP in 2025 to -3.5 percent in 2026 and -3.6 percent in 2027.

The package will seek to shift attention toward the workforce, arguing that the EU’s competitiveness agenda can’t succeed without addressing mounting labor shortages and skills gaps.

The Commission identified the sectors facing employment pressures.

In Europe’s automotive sector, key to Germany’s economic success, the Commission will say that 600,000 jobs are at risk as the industry grapples with the transition away from combustion-engine vehicles and strong competition from China.

In the battery industry, some 85,000 jobs are in jeopardy. The solar manufacturing sector accounts for nearly 59,000 jobs affected by market pressures, while low-carbon measures could affect another 4,500 positions in the steel industry.

The concerns reflect a broader debate in Brussels about whether Europe is losing ground in strategic industries to rivals like China and the United States, despite plans to boost domestic manufacturing.

Boosting skills

At the same time, employers across the bloc continue to report difficulties in finding workers with the right qualifications.

According to the Commission’s figures, 68 percent of medium-sized companies reported skills shortages in 2023. By 2024, 77 percent of firms said labor and skills shortages were acting as a barrier to investment.

The findings reinforce the central message of this semester package: Economic resilience increasingly depends on investing in human capital.

For the first time, the EU recommendations accompanying the package will include a dedicated focus on putting education, vocational training, adult learning, STEM skills and reskilling closer to the heart of the EU’s economic governance framework.

“Investing in people is Europe’s strongest competitiveness strategy and the foundation of a Union that can out-innovate, out-compete and withstand any challenge,” said Mînzatu. “This is what changes with this European Semester: Human capital is now treated as a core driver of competitiveness, with country-specific guidance for each member state.”

The employment challenges outlined in the document extend beyond job losses.

The Commission will warn that low-income households could face a disproportionate burden from higher transport fuel prices, costing them an additional 1.4 percent of their income. It will highlight persistent labor market inequalities, noting that non-EU citizens remain significantly more likely to be overqualified for the jobs they hold than native workers.

Brussels will also point to concerns about job quality, saying one in five workers are trapped in low-wage jobs in sectors with weak productivity growth, while one in 12 face a risk of in-work poverty.

Against that backdrop, the Commission will use the package to push EU countries toward reforms aimed at boosting skills, improving job quality and strengthening social protection systems.

As part of Wednesday’s package, Brussels will also put a red flag on Bulgaria’s financial health after scrutinizing its spending habits. Germany, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia have undergone similar scrutiny but emerged from the Commission’s assessment unscathed — for the time being.

Israeli forces enter 2 villages in southern Syria in second incursion within 24 hours

Israeli forces entered two villages in Syria’s southern Quneitra province on Saturday in what Syrian state media described as the second incursion into the area in less than 24 hours, Anadolu reports.

Earlier Saturday, SANA said an Israeli force consisting of four military vehicles entered the Abu Madhra farm area west of Sayda al-Golan shortly after midnight.

According to the agency, the troops raided a house, detained a civilian and took him into Israeli-held territory. No reason for the detention was immediately known.

Another Israeli force, also consisting of four military vehicles, entered the village of Al-Asha in southern Quneitra on Saturday morning, SANA reported.

The agency said the troops searched several homes before withdrawing from the area.

Israeli forces have carried out near-daily incursions and military operations in southern Syria, including raids, checkpoints, house searches and detentions, according to Syrian media reports.

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria no longer valid and moved into the buffer zone separating the two sides. Syria’s new administration has repeatedly said it remains committed to the agreement.

Despite the absence of direct threats from Syria’s new leadership, Israel has continued carrying out airstrikes and military operations in the country, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to military sites and equipment.
