The US military accidentally struck an Iranian elementary school on February 28, killing at least 168 children and 14 teachers, likely due to outdated intelligence on a nearby naval base, according to sources briefed on a preliminary investigation.
The strike in Minab targeted a neighboring Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facility, but US Central Command relied on old Defense Intelligence Agency data, leading to the deadly error, the sources said. Satellite imagery showed the school had been separated from the IRGC compound since 2016, but old coordinates apparently contributed to the mistake.
The Defense Intelligence Agency and US Central Command declined comment on the ongoing investigation. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he was unaware of the report and did not comment on US responsibility, telling CNN, “I don’t know about that.”
President Trump had previously suggested that Iran might be responsible for the deadly strike, even claiming without evidence that Tehran had access to the type of missile involved, a claim not supported by experts or other officials, but when reporters pointed out that no one else in his administration publicly backed that line, he replied: “Because I just don’t know enough about it.”
The New York Times first reported the preliminary findings.
