Senior figures linked to US President Donald Trump have intensified criticism of the European Union, in a series of interventions that underscore a growing anti-EU stance within the current US administration.

During a visit to Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Donald Trump Jr. described the EU as “a little bit of a mess” and said business leaders viewed Europe as “a disaster.” His trip to Banja Luka, hosted by allies of Milorad Dodik, was widely seen as a signal of support for pro-Russian political forces in the region.

At the same time, US Vice-President JD Vance delivered a forceful attack on the EU while in Budapest, where he openly backed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of a closely contested election. Vance accused the EU of “one of the worst examples of foreign election interference,” alleging that “bureaucrats in Brussels” were attempting to influence Hungary’s political process.

He urged voters to resist external pressure and support Orbán, reinforcing Washington’s alignment with leaders who have clashed with EU institutions. The remarks echo previous criticism from Vance, including claims that European leaders restrict freedom of speech.

Together, the interventions highlight a clear shift in US messaging, portraying the EU as overreaching and politically biased, while signalling support for governments at odds with Brussels.
