After being detained by masked Migration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) representatives, the State Department ruled that the Trump administration had no premises to deport Tufts College student Rumeysa Öztürk, the Washington Post reported on Monday.
ICE representatives apprehended Öztürk in Somerville, Massachusetts on March 25 after she presumably took part in antisemitic activities and supported recognized fear companies.
According to the Post, the findings stated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio “did not have adequate premises for withdrawing Öztürk’s visa under an authority empowering the leading United States diplomat to secure the diplomacy interests of the United States.”
Öztürk, a 30-year-old doctoral trainee from Turkey, composed an op-ed in 2024 for the Tufts trainee paper which slammed the university’s reaction to the continuous war in between Israel and Hamas.
