Southern Italy has emerged as the national leader in climate livability, with Cagliari in Sardinia securing the top spot in a recent ranking assessing weather conditions across Italian cities.
The ranking, compiled by Corriere della Sera in collaboration with weather website iLMeteo.it, analyzed the climate conditions of Italy’s principal urban centers, placing Naples, Salerno, Brindisi, and Agrigento just behind Cagliari in the 2024 assessment.
The study, now in its fourth edition, highlighted the relative meteorological stability of southern cities compared to their northern counterparts, which faced significant weather-related challenges in the past year. According to iLMeteo.it meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici, northern Italian cities underperformed due to a rise in extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and storms.
Milan, in particular, experienced a substantial increase in precipitation, recording 111 days of rain—an increase of 58% compared to the previous year. The persistent wet conditions and frequent storms negatively impacted the city’s livability score in the ranking.
The findings reinforce a broader trend of climate variability across Italy, with southern regions benefiting from more favorable weather conditions, while the north grapples with increased climatic instability.
As climate patterns continue to shift, these rankings provide an essential snapshot of how weather influences urban life and regional attractiveness.
