A bizarre late-night Taco Bell robbery in Florida has officially landed its perpetrator behind bars.
Authorities say a shirtless man smashed his way through a Taco Bell drive-thru window and robbed the restaurant while armed with nothing more than a “large rock,” sending employees and customers scrambling in panic.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Kewarren Lee Anderson, stormed into the Taco Bell location in Ocala while clutching the rock and demanding money, according to police reports. Investigators say Anderson chased everyone out of the building, giving himself free run of the restaurant for several minutes.
His escape didn’t last long.
After fleeing the scene on foot, Anderson was quickly tracked down by a K-9 unit from the Ocala Police Department. Officers found him hiding behind a dumpster, where body-camera footage reportedly shows him crying and raising his hands as the police dog closed in.
It remains unclear whether Anderson actually made off with any cash during the chaotic robbery. Police later learned that Anderson was homeless at the time and told officers he committed the crime because he needed money, according to an arrest affidavit.
Trouble followed him even after his capture. Just six hours after being booked into the Marion County Jail, Anderson was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with another inmate, leading to an additional battery charge.
On Jan. 22, Anderson was found guilty of both armed robbery and battery at a detention facility. He was sentenced to four years in prison, with credit for the 199 days he had already served.
As strange as the incident sounds, it’s far from the only time chaos has unfolded at a Taco Bell. In recent years, the chain has been the backdrop for several violent and viral incidents, from fatal workplace shootings to shocking videos of customers and security guards clashing inside restaurants.
This time, though, a rock, a drive-thru window, and a police dog were all it took to turn a late-night burrito run into a felony conviction.
