Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was hospitalized Monday night after suddenly falling ill, triggering renewed concern over the longtime lawmaker’s health as Congress faces another tense legislative stretch in President Donald Trump’s second term.
McConnell, 83, was taken to a hospital “out of an abundance of caution” after experiencing what aides described as flu-like symptoms, according to his spokesperson, David Popp. The Kentucky Republican missed key Senate votes on both Monday and Tuesday as doctors monitored his condition.
“His prognosis is positive,” Popp said in a statement Tuesday. “Senator McConnell remains in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business.”
The sudden hospitalization immediately rippled through Capitol Hill, where McConnell remains one of the most powerful figures in Washington despite no longer serving as Senate majority leader. His absence came during a critical week as Senate Republicans navigate budget negotiations and judicial confirmations under the Trump administration.
McConnell’s health has been under close scrutiny in recent years. In early 2023, he was hospitalized after tripping and falling at a private dinner in Washington, D.C., suffering a concussion and a minor rib fracture. He spent several days in the hospital and weeks recovering.
Later that same year, the veteran lawmaker alarmed colleagues and the public when he experienced multiple highly publicized freezing episodes. In one July 2023 incident, McConnell abruptly stopped speaking for roughly 20 seconds during a Senate leadership press conference, standing silently at the podium before aides escorted him away.
At the time, McConnell insisted he was “fine” and continued working, but the moments fueled ongoing questions about his ability to continue leading amid the intense demands of the Senate.
As of Tuesday night, McConnell’s office had not provided a timeline for his discharge or return to the Capitol. Senate aides said contingency plans were in place should his absence extend beyond the week.
For now, allies are publicly striking an optimistic tone — even as the episode adds another chapter to the growing health concerns surrounding one of Washington’s most enduring power brokers.
