NAFDAC Blacklists Indian Firm Over Dangerous Opioid Distribution in West Africa

In a significant move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially blacklisted Aveo Pharmaceuticals Pvt Limited, an Indian pharmaceutical company accused of producing and distributing dangerous opioid combinations in West Africa, including Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the company has been linked to the illegal manufacturing and exportation of two highly potent drugs—Tafrodol and Royal 225.

These drugs contain Tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and Carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant that has been banned due to its severe health risks. Medical experts warn that the combination of these substances can lead to serious complications such as respiratory failure, seizures, overdose, and even death.

NAFDAC’s decision follows an extensive investigation, which gained international attention after an exposé by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The investigation revealed that pharmaceuticals bearing the Aveo Pharmaceuticals logo were being widely distributed on the streets of Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Further evidence uncovered that Aveo Pharmaceuticals was also responsible for the illegal exportation of high-dose Tramadol—above 100mg—a strength that is neither registered nor approved by NAFDAC.

Undercover footage captured Vinod Sharma, the company’s manager operating from the outskirts of Mumbai, admitting to mass-producing these opioids for illicit distribution across West Africa.

In response to these alarming revelations, NAFDAC has not only blacklisted Aveo Pharmaceuticals but also moved to block the future registration of its products in Nigeria.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding stringent pharmaceutical regulations, including thorough product registration, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections, post-marketing surveillance, and pre-shipment inspections for high-risk imports.

This decisive action by NAFDAC underscores the agency’s dedication to ensuring that only safe and approved pharmaceutical products are available to Nigerians.

The infiltration of dangerous opioid combinations into the region has fueled public health concerns, particularly in the fight against drug abuse and substance-related fatalities.

NAFDAC continues to urge stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious pharmaceutical activities.

Strengthening regulatory frameworks and fostering international collaborations will be crucial in preventing the influx of harmful substances into Nigeria and the broader West African region.
