Four people — including two children — were found dead Tuesday inside a Sacramento-area home after authorities were warned it may have been booby trapped, officials said.

Deputies responded to a residence on Copper Sunset Way in Rancho Cordova after receiving two alarming calls, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. One caller reported hearing gunshots at the home. The second call came from a man who claimed to be the shooter and told authorities he had set booby traps inside the house.

When deputies arrived, they discovered the bodies of four people — an adult man, an adult woman, a boy and a girl — all suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, local outlet KCRA reported. The victims have not yet been identified.

Because of the suspect’s warning, authorities approached the scene with extreme caution, fearing the home had been rigged with explosive or dangerous devices. Deputies conducted a thorough sweep of the property and ultimately found no evidence of any traps inside the residence.

The shocking discovery unfolded in the normally quiet Rancho Cordova neighborhood as law enforcement vehicles flooded the street and investigators secured the area for hours.

Officials have not released details about the suspect’s identity, relationship to the victims, or whether anyone has been taken into custody. Investigators also have not said whether the man who called claiming responsibility was among the deceased.

The case remains under active investigation as detectives work to piece together what led to the deadly shooting and verify the circumstances surrounding the disturbing phone calls that brought deputies to the home.
