Michelle Obama is entering her sparkle era — and she’s not asking anyone for permission.

The former first lady, 62, shocked fans this week when she revealed she recently got 10 new ear piercings in one sitting. Even more surprising? Her husband, former President Barack Obama, didn’t notice the dramatic change for nearly four days.

Michelle debuted the new bling during the February 11 episode of her IMO podcast, chatting with her brother Craig Robinson about what inspired the bold move.

“I have always thought about getting some extra piercings in my ear and just never got around to it,” she admitted. “I had a second hole that I got before I had kids, but then I just got lazy and stopped putting an earring in it.”

That changed after watching the younger generation in her life embrace more self-expression — including daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.

“Nowadays, the young people in my life are doing more piercings,” she said, adding that she loves the look. “There’s just more beautiful adornment.”

What started as “a few” piercings quickly escalated.

“I was going in for a few, and then I did my normal self and was like, ‘Oh, put one there and put one there… Oh yeah, let’s try one there.’ So in one sitting, I got 10 piercings,” she revealed.

The result? A cluster of diamond studs lining each ear that she described as looking like a “constellation” that “twinkles.” The sparkling studs climbed up her ears above sleek silver hoops — a noticeable departure from the understated style she often wore during her White House years.

And no — it wasn’t painful.

“It wasn’t painful,” she insisted, as her brother gave her the thumbs-up and called the look “really beautiful.”

But the real jaw-dropper came when Michelle revealed that Barack, 64, didn’t clock the major change right away.

“Barack finally noticed,” she said with a laugh. “It took him a couple of days. He was like, ‘You haven’t had your hair up, you’ve had your hair down.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know, I sleep with you every night, dude.’”

She added that he only commented four days after the appointment.

While the moment was lighthearted, Michelle has made it clear that this new chapter of her life is all about freedom.

After spending eight years in the White House under an intense global spotlight, she’s embracing choices that feel personal — from wearing braids again to experimenting with fashion and jewelry.

“This is the first time in my life when every decision I make is for me,” she said in a 2025 interview.

She previously explained that she avoided certain hairstyles while serving as first lady because she didn’t want her appearance to distract from larger issues.

“I wasn’t sure whether the country was ready for it,” she said of wearing braids during those years. “I didn’t want my hair to become a distraction.”

Now, with no political pressure and no rules to follow, Michelle is leaning into what makes her feel good — whether that’s tennis, swimming, braids, or a full-on ear constellation.

And next time, Barack might want to look a little closer.
