Mexican president pushes back against Googles renaming of Gulf of Mexico

Google Maps is planning to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename several American landmarks, including the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a press conference on Wednesday that Mexico will send a letter to Google questioning its choice to update the body of water’s name.

Earlier this week, Google addressed its decision in a post on X: “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”

The company added that when official names vary between countries, Google Maps users will see the official name as per their own country, while users elsewhere will see both names.
