Governments wants large Convention centre to host major events
The government is considering expanding the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) in Ta’ Qali to develop a large, multi-purpose convention centre. Other sites, including White Rocks in Pembroke and the Villa Rosa project in St Julian’s, have also been reviewed. A government spokesperson confirmed ongoing discussions with private sector stakeholders, highlighting the urgent need for a venue capable of hosting major events like SiGMA, which attracts 25,000 attendees. Officials say Malta lacks the infrastructure to accommodate large-scale conferences, turning down such requests monthly. Conference tourism is seen as a significant economic driver, injecting millions into the economy in just days. Given its existing facilities and central location, expanding MFCC is considered the most viable option. The venue has already hosted major events, including concerts, fairs, and international meetings, making it a strong candidate for redevelopment. (Times of Malta)
Peace and stability Malta’s priorities at European Council
Prime Minister Robert Abela said his priority at the European Council meeting will be promoting peace and stability. He reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to social investment, contrasting it with countries like the UK, which reduced disability funding to increase military spending. Abela emphasised that Malta would not follow this path, highlighting government efforts to boost pensions, increase children’s allowances, and keep electricity bills stable. He also noted that, rather than cutting disability funds, the government expanded tax refunds for parents of children with disabilities. He assured that Malta is not obligated to contribute to military spending or take on the debts of other nations for armaments.
PN accuses Government of intimidation and power abuse
The Nationalist Part has accused the government of abusing its power to silence opposition voices and claimed that Prime Minister Robert Abela is attempting to weaken the Opposition after consolidating control over institutions and the judiciary. Speaking on NET Television, PN Leader Bernard Grech criticised the government for prioritising political intimidation over addressing key issues such as traffic, healthcare, education, and security. He emphasised that the PN remains a strong and united Opposition, committed to being the voice of the people. Grech also outlined the party’s vision for Malta and Gozo, including plans to reform the country’s economic model and strengthen key sectors. He reiterated the PN’s proposal to expand the Gozo Channel fleet with two additional eco-friendly ferries, pledging that this measure would be implemented under a PN government.
