North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a massive explosion at a groundbreaking ceremony in Pyongyang on Sunday, marking the final phase of a project to build thousands of new apartments. State media footage showed Kim, 41, addressing a large crowd, many wearing protective helmets, before triggering the blast in the Hwasong district, an area known for its high-rise developments.
The event is part of a five-year plan to construct 50,000 apartments in the capital. “With this year’s 10,000-household construction project, the 50,000-house initiative in Pyongyang has entered its final stage,” Kim announced during his speech.
The ceremony coincided with the anniversary of his father’s birthday, celebrated in North Korea as the Day of the Shining Star. Kim also visited his family’s mausoleum on Sunday, his first visit in four years, where the embalmed bodies of his father and grandfather are kept.
