Italian actress Eleonora Giorgi has died at the age of 71, her family said on Monday.
Giorgi made dozens of films in the 1970s and 1980s, many of which were comedies and erotic comedies, although she also took on dramatic roles.
In 2023 she announced she had pancreatic cancer on television, smiling as she did so and inviting everyone to “live without wasting time”.
Giorgi’s life was also filled with cinema. An actress and director, she was an Italian sex symbol in the 70s, and in 1982 she won the David di Donatello for the film “Borotalco” by Carlo Verdone. Eleonora Giorgi was born in Rome on October 21, 1953. The actress and director became famous in the 80s thanks to her performances in films that have made the history of Italian cinema.
She has acted in over forty films. Throughout her professional history, she had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the greatest figures in Italian cinema. From Fellini to Argento and Lanfranchi, as well as Mandredi and Verdone. She won a David di Donatello in 1982 for the film Borotalco. Her first film as a leading actress was “Storia di una monaca di Clausura”, after appearing in the film “Roma”, she then devoted herself mainly to various Italian comedy genres. However, among her films, there are also important dramatic films.
Nonetheless, she didn’t only dedicate herself to the world of cinema and also boasts an important theatrical career as an actress and director. In 2003, she also ventured into directing with the film “Uomini & Donne, amori & bugie” in 2003, featuring Ornella Muti, Giorgia Gianetiempo, Paolo Giommarelli, Massimo Corvo, Remo Foglino, Bianca Galvan, Hanja Kochansky, Chiara Mastalli, Riccardo Parisio Perrotti, and Michele Riondino.
Private Life
Eleonora Giorgi had two children: one born from her marriage to publisher Angelo Rizzoli, Andrea, born in 1980, and the other, Paolo, born in 1991 during her relationship with actor Massimo Ciavarro. When Rizzoli was involved in the investigation of the P2 lodge, inevitably Eleonora also suffered the consequences. The actress began to be less active in the entertainment world and years later publicly confessed several times that she always received offers for less significant and less demanding roles.
In a 2016 interview on Domenica In, she stated that she had gone through a long period of heroin addiction, starting in 1974, the year of the death of her then-boyfriend: the young actor Edoardo Momo. She managed to distance herself from this dark period of her life mainly thanks to the support of her husband Angelo Rizzoli.
