Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the US torpedo strike that sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka, calling it an “atrocity” and warning that Washington will regret its actions.
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores,” Araghchi said on X. He added that the Dena, which was operating as a guest of India’s Navy with nearly 130 sailors onboard, was attacked in international waters without warning. “Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” he said.
The attack left at least 87 dead, with dozens missing. Sri Lankan authorities have recovered numerous bodies and rescued 32 survivors.
Search and rescue operations for an estimated 60 people on board who remain unaccounted for would continue on Thursday, authorities said.
