Iran Condemns New U.S. Sanctions, Calling Them a Clear Sign of Hostility

Iran has strongly criticized the latest round of U.S. sanctions, labeling them as a “clear sign of hostility” after Washington imposed restrictions on more than 30 individuals and vessels linked to the country’s oil trade.

The announcement, made on Monday, targets key figures, including the head of Iran’s national oil company, as well as others accused of facilitating oil sales.

This marks the second wave of sanctions in under a month, following President Donald Trump’s reinstatement of his “maximum pressure” policy on Tehran.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, condemned the move in a statement on Wednesday, calling it a “wrongful, unjustified, and illegitimate act that violates the human rights of the Iranian people.” He further accused Washington of obstructing Iran’s economic progress and well-being.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has paradoxically expressed a desire for dialogue with Iran, claiming he wants to see the country “great and successful.” However, his administration’s continued imposition of sanctions tells a different story, raising doubts about the sincerity of his diplomatic overtures.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi firmly dismissed the idea of direct negotiations with the U.S. on Iran’s nuclear program, stating that discussions cannot take place under “pressure, threat, or sanctions.”

His statement reflects Tehran’s deep mistrust, particularly in light of Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal during Trump’s first term.

The landmark agreement, which placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, fell apart when the Trump administration pulled out in 2018. In response, Iran gradually rolled back its commitments under the deal, escalating concerns over its nuclear ambitions.

Amid rising tensions with Washington, Iran has continued diplomatic efforts with European nations. Fresh discussions were held on Monday with representatives from Britain, France, and Germany following renewed engagement in November.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed that another round of talks with European negotiators is expected within three weeks.
