Hamas has accepted a Gaza ceasefire proposal from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, a Palestinian official told Reuters Monday, potentially opening the door to ending the war with Israel.
The plan, delivered via mediators, includes a 70-day truce, the release of 10 Israeli hostages in two phases, and a partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. In return, Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, some serving long sentences.
Israel has not commented. A previous ceasefire ended in March when Israel resumed its Gaza offensive, prompting renewed rocket attacks from Hamas.
Hamas says it’s ready to release all remaining hostages and accept a permanent ceasefire if Israel fully withdraws. However, Prime Minister Netanyahu insists on only a temporary truce tied to hostage releases, maintaining the war will continue until Hamas is destroyed.
