Italy has been effectively split along its Adriatic side after nearly 72 hours of severe weather battered central and southern regions, triggering floods, landslides and major transport disruption.
A bridge over the Trigno river collapsed in the Molise region, cutting a key coastal road and severing road links with Abruzzo. Rail services along the Adriatic line remain suspended between Fossacesia and Vasto due to flooding.
Hundreds of passengers were stranded overnight in Pescara and Ancona stations as authorities scrambled to arrange buses.
Flooding and infrastructure damage have also disrupted hospitals and water supplies, while landslides have isolated small communities, including around 90 residents in Acquasanta Terme in the Marche region.
Authorities are closely monitoring rising water levels at major dams and rivers, with emergency services carrying out rescues and evacuations across affected areas.
