A significant explosion struck the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas earlier today, sending shockwaves through the region. The initial blast occurred in an eight-storey building, resulting in severe damage to the lower floors and shattering windows throughout the structure. Reports have since indicated the occurrence of additional explosions, further heightening concern among residents and officials.

Casualties and Immediate Impact

The Hormozgan Crisis Management Organisation reported that the explosion took place within a residential complex. Tragically, the incident led to the death of a 4-year-old girl and left 14 others injured. Emergency services responded promptly, and investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are ongoing.

Speculation and Official Responses

Some unofficial sources have suggested that Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, may have been the intended target of the blast. However, Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has categorically denied these rumours, labelling them as “completely false”.

In addition, Israel has denied any involvement in the incident, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Other reports mention explosions heard in various Iranian cities, including Ahvaz near the Iran–Iraq border. The Deputy for Security and Law Enforcement in Khuzestan Province reported five deaths and two injuries due to a “domestic gas explosion” in Ahvaz. The local governor of Robat Karim in Tehran province denied security or military incidents in Parand and Robat Karim, attributing observed smoke to a fire in dry reed beds along the Shour River. Over the past hour, videos showing a large plume of smoke near a residential area circulated, allegedly from Parand on Saturday. Another widely shared video on social media shows smoke along Amir Kabir Highway on the Kashan road in Qom, near a military facility.

The head of Qom Fire Department states the smoke results from a waste fire near reed beds. Nevertheless, social media users, referencing past incidents during the twelve-day war with Israel, sarcastically suggested today’s smoke in Qom was due to a gas leak or explosion. Meanwhile, East Azerbaijan Crisis Management confirmed there was no explosion in Tabriz today.
