EPP President rejects any collaboration with far-right

European People’s Party (EPP) President Manfred Weber issued a strong warning about the rise of authoritarianism in Europe. With the EPP Congress taking place in Valencia, where key state and party leaders are gathered, Weber made it clear that his party will never align with far-right groups like France’s National Rally or Germany’s AfD, who he believes pose a threat to European unity and democratic values.

“We are facing an authoritarian wave across the globe, and it’s also making its way into Europe,” Weber said, stressing that populist and extremist parties are the EPP’s primary political adversaries in the years ahead.

He emphasized that cooperation with figures like Alice Weidel of the AfD or Marine Le Pen is completely out of the question. “We work with serious parties, but there is no room for alliances with those who challenge the very foundations of Europe,” he told Euronews

However, Weber signaled openness to engaging with other right-wing parties, such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s ODS, both of which are part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.
