With just five days remaining before Germans vote to elect their government, a new YouGov poll shows support for the conservative CDU/CSU bloc dropping by two percentage points to 27%.
Despite this decline, Friedrich Merz of the CDU remains the frontrunner for chancellor, although this marks the conservatives’ weakest YouGov showing since August 2023.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is currently in second place, followed by the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), led by incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The poll also revealed a three-point increase for the socialist Left Party, bringing its support to 9%, just behind the Greens, who are polling in fourth place at 12%.
