A frightening morning crash involving a school bus and two other vehicles sent a bus driver and four students to the hospital in DeKalb County, Georgia, authorities said.

The accident happened around 6:53 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Clairmont Way, according to the Brookhaven Police Department.

Officials say the DeKalb County School District bus was carrying students from Montclair Elementary School when the crash occurred.

Investigators said the bus was traveling on Century Boulevard and attempting to cross Clairmont Road onto Clairmont Way when another vehicle ran a red light and slammed into the bus.

The impact triggered a chain reaction. After the initial collision, the bus struck a second vehicle before veering off the road and coming to rest on an embankment along Clairmont Road.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and transported the bus driver and four students to a nearby hospital.

Police said their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

According to the DeKalb County School District, there were 29 students on board the bus at the time of the crash.

School police and district officials worked to quickly contact parents and move students to a nearby safe location where they could be checked by medical personnel.

Authorities said the remaining students were either taken to school or safely reunited with their parents.

In a statement, the school district thanked first responders and law enforcement for their swift response.

“We are grateful to first responders and law enforcement for their quick response and care for our students and driver,” the district said.

Police said the driver believed to be responsible for the crash was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device.

Tow trucks were later called in to clear the damaged vehicles from the scene as investigators continued to examine the crash.
