Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made headlines with a bold statement regarding the exclusion of Marcus Rashford from the squad. The England international has not featured for United since December 12, and his absence continued during the 1-0 victory against Fulham on Sunday.
Despite United’s struggles to break down Fulham’s defense, Amorim dismissed the idea of turning to Rashford. Instead, he humorously suggested that Jorge Vital, the club’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, would have been a better option.
“Today on the bench, we missed a bit of pace to change the game, but I prefer it this way,” Amorim remarked. “I would put Vital in before a player who doesn’t give their maximum every day. I won’t compromise in that department.”
Amorim made it clear that his decision is rooted in his expectations of professionalism and dedication. “The reason is always the same—training, discipline, and what I believe a footballer should do in training and life,” he explained. “If things don’t change, I won’t change.”
The manager stressed that his principles apply equally to every player, reinforcing his commitment to maintaining high standards across the team. “If you do the maximum and the right things, then you’re available for selection,” he added.
Despite his ongoing exclusion, Rashford showed sportsmanship by congratulating his teammates on their win. The 27-year-old took to Instagram, writing: “Congratulations on the win lads.”
The victory at Craven Cottage was secured in the 78th minute when defender Lisandro Martinez’s long-range deflected effort looped over Fulham’s goalkeeper, Bernd Leno.
