European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has become the first senior EU figure to publicly back Pope Leo XIV following criticism from Donald Trump over the Pope’s calls for peace.
The President of the European Parliament described the Pontiff as a “symbol of moral courage” and confirmed she had invited him to address a future plenary session.
Trump told reporters he was “not a big fan” of Pope Leo, describing him as “a very liberal person” and suggesting his election had been politically influenced. He also posted an image portraying himself in a Christ-like role healing a sick man, which was later removed following international backlash.
Responding to the controversy, Pope Leo said he had “no intention to debate” with Trump.
Adding her voice to growing support, Metsola said the Pope was not only the spiritual leader of Catholics worldwide but also a figure of “moral clarity in a time where such compasses are increasingly needed.” She emphasised that his message resonates across Europe and is widely respected.
Metsola confirmed that, on behalf of the European Parliament, she had formally reached out to the Holy See to reaffirm the invitation for the Pope to address MEPs in plenary. She expressed hope that he would visit in the near future and share his message with Europe.
