What should have been a quiet night turned into a devastating tragedy for one Texas family.
A mother and her young son were inside their bedroom when a vehicle suddenly crashed straight through their home—killing them both, according to authorities.
The horrific incident happened in the early morning hours on North Ollie Street in Stephenville, about 100 miles southwest of Dallas. Police say the vehicle “left the roadway” and slammed into the house, tearing through the wall and into the room where the family was sleeping.
Inside were 49-year-old Barbara Rocha and her 7-year-old son, Alex Aaron Rocha.
They didn’t stand a chance.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, but died from their injuries.
The emotional aftermath has been just as heartbreaking.
“All I heard is a crash… my little brother screaming and my mom praying,” a family member recounted, describing what another sibling inside the home witnessed in those terrifying moments. “That’s stuck in my head right now.”
Authorities say 18-year-old Gracie Yates was behind the wheel of the vehicle that crashed into the home. She has been charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide, according to jail records.
Police have not said whether alcohol or drugs were involved, though a GoFundMe created by a family friend claims the crash was caused by a drunk driver. Officials have not confirmed that detail.
Yates was booked into the Erath County Jail on Sunday. A judge set her bond at $14,500, and records show she was released on Tuesday.
Now, the victims’ family is left picking up the pieces.
According to the fundraiser, Barbara’s husband has lost not only his wife and son—but also his home. He is now struggling to cover funeral costs while trying to find temporary housing and rebuild his life.
