Eisenkot’s Yashar party won 21 seats in the election. Bennett’s announcement comes ahead of consultations between Herzog and Knesset factions to determine who will receive the mandate to try to assemble a governing coalition.
“Bennett made clear throughout the election campaign that he would respect the voters’ decision, and that is what he is doing,” the party said in a statement.
Leaders of the change bloc are also preparing for a four-way meeting Wednesday, their first since the election.
Herzog is scheduled to begin consultations on forming a government Wednesday. Addressing the process Sunday, he urged representatives to approach the discussions prepared to consider ways to avoid another election.
“I hope the representatives will come with an open mind and an open heart — to listen to and voice ideas and find creative solutions in order to prevent another election,” Herzog said.
The president also called on political leaders to recognize the election results and adjust their positions to the new parliamentary situation.
“As we all know—during an election campaign, naturally and predictably—the candidates climb tall trees. But the election is over, the election results are an established fact—they are reality. And this is the time to tell all the leaders—stop climbing the trees and position yourselves in accordance with this reality.”
Bennett’s decision to support Eisenkot follows his campaign pledge to respect the voters’ decision. His recommendation will be formally presented to Herzog as the president consults the factions before deciding which candidate will be tasked with attempting to form the next government.
