A Venezuelan singer and accomplished pianist has been found dead in the swimming pool of his upscale South Florida home, sparking a police investigation after disturbing evidence was discovered near his body.
Gustavo Ormo, known professionally as Gus Ormo, was discovered Friday morning, October 16, at his residence in the gated Weston Hills community, approximately 25 miles northwest of Miami.
Authorities initially responded to what appeared to be a possible drowning, but the discovery of a cord extending into the swimming pool quickly raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home on Quail Roost Drive around 9 a.m. after receiving an emergency call.
When first responders reached the backyard, they discovered an adult man submerged in the swimming pool. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency dispatch communications reportedly indicated that the man appeared to be tied up, although investigators have not confirmed whether he was physically restrained.
Aerial footage captured by local news helicopters showed what appeared to be a long cord stretching across the pool deck and into the water near his body.
Authorities have not established whether the cord was attached to Ormo or played any role in his death.
Because of the unusual circumstances, the sheriff’s office dispatched homicide detectives and crime scene investigators to examine the property.
Officials described the death as suspicious but have not announced whether they believe a homicide occurred.
Ormo’s body was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will help determine his cause and manner of death.
As of October 18, authorities had not publicly released those findings or announced any arrests.
The discovery has unsettled residents of Weston Hills, an upscale residential neighborhood known for its golf course, gated streets and quiet surroundings.
Neighbors told local television reporters they were shocked to learn that a death investigation was underway just steps from their homes.
“It’s sad what happened, and it wasn’t something I expected to happen in Weston,” resident Bruno Gedikinan told NBC 6.
Another neighbor, Mariano Cascata, described the situation as highly unusual for the community.
Ormo’s family has also been left searching for answers.
His sister, Antonieta Ormo, confirmed his identity to CBS News Miami, explaining that relatives had received little information about what happened.
Investigators have not disclosed who placed the initial emergency call, how long Ormo had been in the water or whether anyone else was present at the residence before deputies arrived.
Public property records indicate that Ormo had owned the home for several years.
Originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela, Ormo built a musical career centered on romantic compositions, expressive piano performances and songs celebrating human connection.
His work attracted listeners through its emotional melodies and themes of love, reflection and personal identity.
In 2025, he released the nine-track album Alquimia, followed by his newest project, AGAPE, which debuted earlier this month.
The six-track instrumental album was described as an important milestone in his career, placing the piano at the center of a deeply personal musical journey.
In promotional materials for the release, Ormo reflected on his lifelong relationship with music and the powerful emotions it could evoke.
He explained that he wanted listeners to reconnect with feelings that can sometimes be difficult to express.
“In a world that makes us experience emotional numbness, the album is an invitation to feel without filters or need for words,” Ormo said.
He described the project as his way of giving something back to the music that had shaped his life.
His career was still moving forward in the days leading up to his death.
Just one day before his body was discovered, Ormo shared an Instagram post promoting AGAPE Behind the Music, a project offering fans a closer look at his latest compositions.
Earlier this year, he also attended a red-carpet event in Aventura, Florida, where he discussed his musical accomplishments and his pride in his Venezuelan heritage.
Ormo had composed a tribute to his homeland centered on reconciliation and unity, reflecting his belief that music could help bring people together despite political and social divisions.
Those closest to the musician are now mourning a man whose work was devoted to expressing emotions through music.
Meanwhile, detectives continue trying to reconstruct his final hours and determine what led to the discovery in his backyard swimming pool.
Although homicide investigators are handling the case, their involvement does not establish that Ormo was murdered. The investigation and medical examiner’s findings will be critical to determining whether his death resulted from an accident, a medical emergency or a criminal act.
For now, the sudden loss of a musician who had been celebrating the release of new music has left his family, neighbors and fans awaiting answers.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office investigation remains ongoing.
