Bulgaria will begin supplying critical infrastructure facilities with anti-drone systems and has directed police to increase patrols at weapons production and storage sites, the government said Friday, amid heightened security concerns.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said the government had reviewed security conditions at critical infrastructure sites and will start equipping them with anti-drone technology. He said instructions had also been issued to police to step up patrols at arms production and storage facilities.
Depot fire raises alarm over munitions security
The move follows a fire days earlier at a weapons depot operated by EMCO in Bulgaria, which raised concerns about the security of munitions manufacturers in the Balkan country. EMCO said the fire was the result of sabotage, pointing to more than 10 similar incidents at Bulgarian defense firms since 2011, though it did not identify any suspects.
EMCO is run by Bulgarian arms trader Emilian Gebrev, whom Bulgarian prosecutors have previously alleged was targeted by Russian operatives in attacks on his facilities.
